Miss Sofia Makrydima

I was referred for a hysteroscopy at St Georges but was very anxious about the procedure and after an unpleasant encounter with the hospital booking staff (who are not nice people at all) I cancelled my appointment and investigated going private to be sure of having a consultation to discuss my fears. Miss Makrydima called to find out why I had cancelled, and spent quite a lot of time reassuring me and explaining everything, so that I agreed to have the procedure at St Georges. During my appointment she again explained everything to me and assured me that she would stop immediately if I needed her to. She also angled the screen towards me so that I could see what was going on and didn't feel as though something mysterious was being done to me without my knowledge. Afterwards she needed to take some biopsy samples, and when I found the speculum too painful she immediately applied local anaesthetic so that it was all painless. Finally, Miss Makrydima went through all her findings with me and explained the medical terms she was putting in her report. She also included in the report a recommendation for my GP to prescribe HRT based on what she saw during the hysteroscopy.

I first met my consultant gynaecologist Sofia a couple of days prior to my surgery, and after meeting her I immediately felt relaxed in her presence putting me at ease even though when she was presenting me with the worst case scenario. Sofia took her time explaining all the possible outcomes and was clear in her explanation and very sympathetic and understanding given my insecurities. She put me at ease on the day of surgery and even took the time after my surgery to ring my sister and tell her how the surgery went, which we really appreciated. The follow up treatment also presented by Sofia was exceptional, and she genuinely put me at ease, and helped me intensely with the whole procedure from start to finish. I am very thankful to Sofia and her team at St George’s hospital.

My mother is under the care of Dr Sofia for her recent cancer diagnosis. We have been incredibly impressed by her professionalism, warmth and clinical care. After my mother’s surgery; she’s been very approachable and often answers and addresses our concerns late into the evening and outside of working hours, providing reassurance whenever we’ve needed it. She has gone over and above her role as a clinician for our mother. We are very grateful for her efforts and care and highly recommend her.
